Sing a New Song

Lyrics:

We are walking in the deep, deep dark,
Stagger suddenly beneath this weight
Has the future ever seemed so stark?
Have you ever felt your heart so ache?

But the light that flows into these shadowlands
Only the passion of God could create
He will lift off your burden to let you stand--
This is the peace for which we wait

(Chorus)
Wake up, wake up, and sing a new song;
Glory to God, here comes the True Dawn
Wake up, wake up, and sing a new song

Songwriter's Comments: I wrote this for the Christmas Eve 2009 worship service at New Hope Christian Church, Columbus, Indiana.  The scriptures for that service were Psalm 96:1-4, Isaiah 9:2-7, and Luke 2:1-14.  The verses were shaped around the Isaiah passage, while the chorus came primarily from the psalm.  The Luke passage was woven throughout the song.

The Baby Born to be King (Song of the Magi)

Lyrics:

We have spent our lives in search of wisdom, to tease the answers out
But the more we learn, the less we think we know; we feed the roots of doubt
Such uncertainty is just a curse, and shrinks the seeking soul
We long to find a King who opens wisdom up to love to make us whole

(Chorus 1)
So we've found the baby born to be King
And we owe Him every sacrifice that we can bring
Hallelujahs just come naturally now we've seen
This infant royalty
Yes, He's the baby, He's the baby born to be King

Light of the World

Audio:

Lyrics:

Christ, the Light of the world, we praise You,
Holy One entering the world.
We rejoice; hark, the Messiah comes:
Salvation's banner of love unfurled.

Christ, the Light of the world, we bless You,
Living Word from the Father's heart.
You will offer Life to everyone;
You love us all where'er we are.

Shepherds in the night
Take in a wondrous sight,
See with their eyes
To their surprise
Angels on high
With trumpets' cry
Announce the Lord of Life.

King of Glory

Audio:

Lyrics:

It's not natural--this woman's still a virgin;
How am I to believe that God would conceive a Child within her?
This is just too much--what does Joseph have to go on?
Just the Word in a dream that things aren't always as they seem

By the power of the Holy Spirit, heaven has come down
No one knows the beginning or the end of God's creating
In a land of darkness, God has come like the sunrise to the morning
Praise to Jesus!  Laugh with me, for a baby is the King of Glory

I Am the Greatness (Herod's Song)

Topics:
Lyrics:

Patently unworthy to aspire to royalty,
Doubtlessly a poor, deluded, peasant family,
Urged along by foreigners proclaiming prophecies--
I can smell the scent familiar of rebellion

I can see the shadows of the vultures' patient wings;
Miscreants and fools would love to make or be made king
In the end, they're happy just to spread their suffering:
This situation calls for my solution

Child of Mystery

Audio:

Lyrics:

I am so important, or that's how I behave,
So unlike the Christ I claim to follow
He could've used His power; instead He chose the grave,
Obedient to the Father's faithful calling

Duty, love, and honor turn their eyes to me,
So I may seek the strong, and pure, and noble
But in my land of fancy, I look and do not see
How God's self-sacrifice could make us hopeful

We did not love first, but were loved by the Holy One
Who sent as a Lamb for sin His only begotten Son

Song of Simeon (I Can Peacefully Go)

Lyrics:

Bring Him to me, the child of dedication;
My arms need to hold Him; your Son I must see
Israel's strength and the hope for every nation,
The Lord God Almighty has brought the Messiah to me

All of my life I have longed for consolation;
I have made righteousness my goal and prize
Now I can see, through holy revelation,
God is still faithful to me, I will peacefully die

I can peacefully go; my Salvation is here;
The faithful Redeemer has finally come - - He's appeared

Songwriter's Comments: While I had written many poems and lyrics before this, I consider this song to be the first "real" completed song I ever (co-)wrote.  Randy Rodgers and I, with help from Tim Figgins, wrote this on a Saturday evening.  I remember stopping after we were basically done to run to the store and get chicken to come back and make teriyaki chicken and rice (or something like that).  Randy and I performed the song the next evening at Gifts for the Christ Child, the Christmas-themed talent show that Hopwood puts together every December.
